Who Is Your Moses?

February 3, 2012

The Israelites had Moses to lead them. He was called by God to stand up against the Egyptian Pharaoh and lead the Israelite nation out of bondage and into the Promised Land. Moses stood in the gap for his people; he led them through the wilderness; he prayed for them; he rejoiced with them; he even disciplined them at times. When he got angry with his people, he called them together and told them to choose which side they were going to stand on—God’s or their own. Moses was probably as “real” as one can be.

Do you have a Moses? Do you have a wise, godly mentor in your life? Do you have a friend, sibling, teacher, pastor, or someone else that you can go to for godly, biblical truth and wisdom to lead you and guide you? Do you have someone who will be the voice in the wilderness? You need someone who you can go to be “real” and honest with—and someone who will be real and honest with you in return. You need someone to stand in the gap for you when you are too weak to carry on. You need someone to pray with you, rejoice with you, and, yes, even be that “discipline” for you. You need someone to say: “Look, what are you doing? You need to choose—are you on God’s side or your own side?”

I’m blessed to say I have many friends I call “Moses” in my life. I have a friend I can call and vent my frustrations to, and she’ll listen and encourage me when I need it most. I have a friend whom I text “Pray now!” and she stands in the gap as my prayer warrior. I have a friend whom I can just have fun with and laugh until my sides ache, forgetting for a few moments that I’m a grown up and not a giggly 10-year-old with her BFF. I have a friend whom teaches me so much through her example as a wife and mom. I have a friend whom exhibits tough love—she looks me in the eye, gives me godly wisdom, and keeps me accountable … lovingly but firmly. I need all my “Moses” friends in my life. They encourage me, love me, and make my life much better as they help me recognize and fulfill God’s purpose in my life.

Without Moses, the Israelites would have surely stayed in bondage or drowned in their decisions or wandered the wilderness even longer or given up their faith in God. But they had Moses.

Who is your Moses?

“So the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend.” (Exodus 33:11)

Ain’t that the truth! Life is difficult enough with support. Imagine what it would be like without anyone to lean on…impossible at best. I have a few church family members that I go to for that encouragement, but more often than not, I look to my wife. She inspires me to want to be best man of God I can be. A close second are my fellow bloggers in faith :D. Great post…
