More of God

February 17, 2012

I just found out something that shocked me … stunned me … nearly left me speechless. I asked my grandfather how his solitaire games have been going, and he told me he quit playing cards.

Forever.

No more cards.

Nada.

What???

For as long as I can remember—which is over 30 years—my nearly 85-year-old grandpa has played solitaire every night. With the same old, bent deck of cards. Every night.

My grandpa said he made a deal with God that he would give up playing cards to do something more productive that wasn’t such a waste of time. Like reading his Bible.

Can you see my jaw dropping?

I believe I was nearly speechless because I was convicted. My grandpa has played cards all his life, and after eight decades he has changed his life to have more of God.

What I am doing to have more of God? I’m not playing solitaire, but I am pushing the snooze button … a dozen more times than necessary. I’m watching TV probably more than I should. I’m reading a novel that I can’t put down until I read “just one more chapter.” I’m checking Facebook and Twitter and all my favorite blogs again and again.

None of these things are bad! But what do I need to cut down—or out—in order to have more of God, of His Word, of His breath in me?

My elderly grandfather changed his lifestyle to obey God’s leading. What am I doing to get more of God?

What are you doing?

Wow, what an eye opener! Praise God that He shows us examples of how we should live our lives, through anyone! Thanks for the reality check!
