The Devil Likes the Letter “D”

June 11, 2012

The devil is real and is an enemy to those who love the Lord. First Peter 5:8 says, “Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”

Satan wants to devour us. He has a vendetta against God. Jealous of God, Satan wanted to be the one all creation worshipped and adored. Now, instead of joining the choirs of heavenly angels, he prowls the earth looking for someone to devour. His agenda? To devour us, the believers who know that Christ is the only one to be praised, worshipped, and adored.

Apparently, the devil likes the letter “D” … his agenda is filled with D-words.

1. Deflect

The devil tries to get Christians to talk about anything but the name of Jesus. Let’s talk about the weather, last night’s game, some political scandal, a new DVD release, a funny post on Facebook … but let’s not share the life-changing power of Jesus with our neighbors, our friends, or our co-workers. That’s uncomfortable. Maybe if they bring it up. They know we go to church—they’ll ask us questions if they want to. Right?

Are you talking about the name of Jesus—the only name that makes demons shudder and fall at the mere mention? Or are you deflecting to avoid awkwardness?

“Give the Lord the glory due His name” (Psalm 29:2, HCSB).

2. Defame

Jesus’ name, spoken by a believer with power an authority can drive the devil and his demons away. But what if Jesus’ name is laughed at, mocked, taken in vain? All power and authority of His name drifts away, and Satan snickers. Trumping one of the Ten Commandments? Awesome! Getting believers to defame the name of their Lord and Savior? Easier than you might think!

Do you ever take the name of the Lord God in vain? Do you uphold His name with honor and glory, or do you defame God’s name to look cool, to tell a joke, or to express extreme anger?

“Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain” (Exodus 20:7, KJV).

3. Death

The ultimate goal of Satan is bring death to all people. He knows that Jesus brings everlasting life. He knows that heaven is a place of eternal peace with God—and that’s why he doesn’t want you to believe in heaven, in eternal life, in God. He wants you to go to hell—the place of eternal death and damnation. (Spoiler alert: God already has victory over death! Satan has already been defeated!)

Are you living as though God has already defeated death? Or are you believing Satan’s lies and living as though there is no eternal life that is available for you to choose?

“Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain”
(1 Corinthians 15:55-58, NIV).

4. Destroy & Destruct

Ohhhh, how Satan loves to destroy the lives of God’s people. Causing destruction is his goal, his hobby, his specialty! Destroying families through divorce, rebellion, abuse, anger, resentment, unforgiveness, harsh words, pain, heartache, and death all bring destruction to God’s holy institution: the family.

Are you allowing Satan to destroy your family, or are you praying against and arming yourself and your family against his schemes and tactics?

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10, NIV).

5. Divorce

Divorce is the ultimate result of #4. Satan hopes to bring destruction to families in order to destroy them to the point of no return: divorce. Divorce is not a one-time event; it destroys families for a lifetime. It’s not just a choice of a couple; there are lasting affects for all family members. Children of divorce always have to deal with being in a divorced family—so do their spouses, their in-laws, their friends, their children, their grandchildren, and on and on. Divorce is not only for those outside the church. It is a reality for believers, as well. Divorce is the ultimate way to destroy a family. Satan loves it.

Are you looking at divorce as the last possible option? Or do you look at divorce as no option at all—it’s not even spoken in your home?

“Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD”
(Joshua 24:15, NIV).

6. Defeat

Even Christians who know for certain of their eternal life, whose families are intact, who do not take the Lord’s name in vain … even these believers can struggle with another tactic of the enemy: feeling defeated. A believer feels defeated in the negative thoughts he thinks and feels about himself. A defeated believer lives without much joy, victory, or fullness in life, because he believes in the lies Satan whispers to him: You’re not good enough! God’s grace really doesn’t cover you or what you’ve done. If people only knew the truth about you. You may love God, but you’ll never amount to much. Do all believers struggle with negativism in their lives? Probably. It can be easy to believe the lies and feel defeated. But God wants you to live in His freedom and grace and mercy.

Do you believe the lies Satan tells you? Or do you believe God’s truth? Are you saying to Satan: Yeah, you’re right, I’m no good … or are you saying Shut up! Get away from me! I am a child of God!

“How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” (1 John 3:1, NIV).

All believers struggle with the strategies of Satan’s warfare plan; he’s been fighting the battle for centuries. But the Bible is full of God’s truth on how to combat the devil.

  • “Do not give the devil a foothold” (Ephesians 4:27)
  • “Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes” (Ephesians 6:11)
  • “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7)

Friends, we are indeed in battle; but we are fighting an unusual fight. We are engaging in battle that has already been won! So fight as a victorious warrior and live victoriously!

“Thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:57)
